We all know moving house can be stressful. But does it need to be?

Kimberley Delius runs Lumen Domus in Bath, a home and office organisation business, which specialises in helping people pack up their house and unpack at the other end, among other services. She reveals some of her tips for a successful move.

Tip number one - get some help! You don’t need to struggle on your own. Most probably you’ve accumulated a mountain of belongings and working out how you’re going to pack it up can be a daunting task, so if someone else can help it will be done in half the time and half the pain!

Moving house is often time for a fresh start. It’s an opportunity to think about what you really want to bring to the new house, an opportunity to have a good sort through and get rid of things you no longer need or use. Perhaps you’re downsizing or maybe want a fresh look for the new home. Most Removal Companies charge by weight these days so moving house is a great excuse to have a ‘purge’ on those unwanted items.

The key to a good move is to be organised. If you are going to have a lot of boxes keep a master list – what’s in what box and where; and put a list of contents on each box – it will potentially save you a lot of strife looking for things at the other end. I also recommend packing a ‘1st Day box’. This will contain items that you will want to find as soon as possible – from some easy meals, to toiletries, to mugs, teabags and a kettle!

So, far from being a stressful time, a move can be liberating. It’s a chance to have a shake-up – to clean out any clutter that’s built up and make a new start!
